Sometimes the internet gives you exactly what you need.

A simple request in the popular “What Up Acadiana!” Facebook group turned into a massive local comedy thread after Shyann Vincent posted looking for someone available to “marry her friend” in New Iberia.

She meant an officiant.

Someone ordained. Someone who could perform a wedding ceremony.

Acadiana read it as: Who wants to marry my friend?

And that was pretty much it.

Acadiana Immediately Started Asking The Important Questions

Instead of recommendations for ministers and officiants, people started sizing up the potential mystery spouse.

One commenter wanted to know if she cooked and cleaned. Another had a much more South Louisiana-specific requirement:

“Does she fish? I need to see a picture of her boat.”

Another commenter said her husband needed a new boat, so she might be willing to participate if the money was right, reasoning that “boats ain’t cheap.” Someone else said he ran the proposition by his wife, but she apparently “wasn’t too enthusiastic about it.”

Questions about bonus family scenarios and what the mystery friend brought to the table followed.

At one point, someone asked if this was essentially a New Iberia version of “Married at First Sight” and wanted to know if tickets would be available.

Honestly, fair question.

Of Course The New Iberia Haircut Entered The Conversation

You cannot mention New Iberia on Acadiana Facebook without somebody bringing up the haircut.

Sure enough, one potential volunteer needed one critical piece of information before making any commitments:

“Ima have to see the haircut first.”

Another commenter dubbed the entire situation “Father Of The Baw-ride,” adding “New Iberia edition.”

And if you understand every part of that sentence without needing an explanation, congratulations. You have probably lived here long enough to still be giggling to yourself as you read this.

Eventually She Had To Clear This Whole Thing Up

As the misunderstanding grew, Vincent finally jumped back into her own comment section with an important clarification:

“I AM SOOO SORRY FOR THE MISUNDERSTANDING!!! I need an officiant!!!”

Thankfully, mixed in with hundreds of jokes were people who actually understood the assignment and offered real suggestions and connections.

So, despite accidentally launching Acadiana’s newest matchmaking service, it appears the original mission may have been accomplished.

And that is really the best part of the whole thing.

A woman needed help finding someone qualified to perform her friend’s wedding. Acadiana gave her potential officiants, prospective spouses, boat questions, New Iberia haircut jokes and enough material to keep people laughing through their lunch break.

Full disclosure: I was recently ordained myself, but unfortunately I’m not available. Otherwise, I might have volunteered just to say I was part of this little piece of Acadiana internet history.

Now I just want to meet the bride and groom.

After all this, we’re invested.

LOOK: Things from the year you were born that don't exist anymore

The iconic (and at times silly) toys, technologies, and electronics have been usurped since their grand entrance, either by advances in technology or breakthroughs in common sense. See how many things on this list trigger childhood memories—and which ones were here and gone so fast you missed them entirely.
