A person in Mamou was able to remove an ATM machine from a bank early Monday morning and then reportedly fired shots at a police officer when he was confronted.

According to several citizens in Mamou, around the hospital, they heard a loud noise in the early morning hours as a backhoe dragged the machine down the road. Many of the citizens thought it was the garbage collector making rounds, but it wasn't. Then suddenly, the noise they heard was followed by gunfire.

Reports out suggest that nearly 11 rounds were fired from the person attempting to steal the ATM machine from Citizen's Bank.

The Mamou Police are being assisted by State Police and The Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office in locating the person responsible for this. We will continue to follow this developing story from Mamou.
