This week Monday Night Football on ESPN featured the Pittsburgh Steelers at the San Francisco 49ers, but instead of being featured in the spotlight, both teams and their fans were left in the dark, literally.  Two power outages at Candlestick Park delayed the game around kickoff, and then again early in the second quarter.

The first outage pushed the opening kickoff back for almost a half hour.  A transformer can be seen blowing in the bottom left corner of the video below as the entire stadium and surrounding areas simultaneously go dark.  The second outage happened at the beginning of the second quarter and delayed the game for another 15 minutes.

Joe Molica, a spokesman for Pacific Gas & Electric Co. still has no clue what caused the outage.

“So far I don’t know what the cause is,” Molica said. “We do know that Candlestick was the only customer affected by this outage.”

Molica said PG&E and park authorities had made all the routine checks earlier in the day and that all systems appeared to be in order.

Tonight was the final home game for the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick, but they have already clinched a playoff spot and will be hosting a home playoff game in January as NFC West champs.

Let's hope they get things sorted in time.
