Louisiana has seen a surge in abandoned pets across the state in recent years. Shelters are at max capacity, and rescues are being overloaded from every direction nationwide. Now more than ever, adoption, fostering, and spaying and nurturing your pets, at the very least, are needed to prevent seeing what we saw today in Lafayette off of a major interstate.

Over the years, my family has become very involved in animal rescue and educating others on the importance of fostering and adopting instead of purchasing pets from breeders. Every day, someone surrenders a full-bred husky, German shepherd, and even designer dogs like Labradoodles, find themselves in shelters after being purchased for hundreds and sometimes even thousands of dollars.

There are incredible rescues nationwide that specifically target these commonly surrendered breeds, so if you're in the market for a dog or puppy, just search online for a rescue that specializes in that specific breed. This goes for cats and pretty much any animal or pet you can think of.

What we saw on the side of the Evangeline Thru-way Sunday afternoon is precisely why folks involved in animal rescue tend to sound like a broken record and are always advocating for people to adopt not shop.

Sunday afternoon, we discovered an adorable white puppy that was tied to a pole near the Evangeline Thru-way in Lafayette without food or water. Surrounded by trash and discarded as such.

This is the stark reality of many pets that were the result of an accidental litter, someone deciding they can no longer care for them due to financial struggles, or welcoming a new baby.

As a pet owner, spay and neuter your pets, and if you are interested in getting a pet, fostering is a great way to decide if a pet is right for you and your family without the financial commitment, and of course adopt if you are in a position to do so.

Lucky for this little pup, she is now on the path to finding her forever home.

After making this heartbreaking discovery, we quickly reached out to see if any shelters or rescues could take the pup in. We were told that in most cases, shelters have a 1-2 week wait for dogs of any kind, and many are forced to euthanize perfectly healthy dogs to make space for more.

Thankfully, Southern States Bully Rescue stepped up and offered to take the puppy in despite also being overloaded with rescues.

Not every dog or puppy found gets such a happy ending, but with more people raising awareness, hopefully, more dogs can be saved and placed with loving families.
