Roots the Journey—A Black History Community Performance at ACA

For over 30 years, Roots, the Journey has been the signature performance of Hamilton Academy Performance Company in Lafayette. Thousands of theater lovers have seen Root, the Journey since its original production in 1988. This year's performance, as in years past, will make you laugh, and cry and is certain to touch the human spirit and soul of every audience member. No other performance in Lafayette will speak to the African American journey and willpower like this legendary theater performance directed by Grace Hamilton-Mayfield.

Alumna Grace Hamilton-Mayfield was recently named a SPARK Lifetime Achievement Honoree by the UL Lafayette College of the Arts. Hamilton-Mayfield is honored by ULL for the advancements of the arts in Louisiana and the U.S. She is the first female of color to receive the award.

The dream was to create a piece that would showcase the beauty of all African Americans, enrich the soul, and inspire audiences. That dream became a reality when Roots, the Journey was commissioned by the National Association for University Women in 1988 for their National Convention. The performance depicted the pain and frustration of poverty and discrimination of growing up black in a Southern state during slavery. Since its original inception Roots, the Journey has expanded to include the Civil Rights struggle and beyond. Roots, the Journey reminds us that Cultural Diversity, Equity and Inclusion still needs work today. -Hamilton Academy of the Arts

There is no better way to celebrate National Black History Month than to take in a performance of this amazing reflection on humanity. Roots, the Journey—A Black History Community Performace reminds all of us that art is not bound by race, poverty or social status.

The amazingly talented actors, dancers and musicians, mostly locals, are awe-inspiring as they open up difficult conversations and feelings through art.
