Everyone has their quiet place, but for those of us in south Louisiana, we all share one place in common as our "get away." That being, country roads.

Growing up here, I have often heard people say that they were going ride "in the country." As a kid, I had no idea why people would resort to the gravel roads, but now I get it.

There's something majestic about riding along gravel/dirt roads. Is it the sound of gravel hitting the bottom of your vehicle or is it the scenery that comes with the ride?

Whatever the case may be, there's something special about leaving the "real world" behind and hitting the country roads.

Friends have often told me that they hit the gravel roads to escape reality. They say that there's something special about going down a country road with the radio up and the windows down. I assume it's something only we here in the south would understand.

But what is it about the back roads in south Louisiana that eases the mind? Is it just being away from the everyday mess or is there something therapeutic about dirt roads and fields?

The "sound" of silence is often described as the best of form of therapy. Perhaps it's the silence the countryside has to offer up that brings us back down to earth.

In any case, I'm sure you can relate to driving down a country road once or twice when you needed to escape from it all. Let's never forget this treasure.

After all, sometimes the country roads do take you home.
