As families are rushing to try to come up with a back-to-school plan with school starting in less than a month, many are deciding to do virtual online learning. Student enrollment in the Lafayette Online Academy is bigger than anyone ever thought it would be. I think a lot of parents that said 3 months ago that they would never consider virtual school, are now enrolling their children in the online academy with the rise of COVID-19 cases.

According to the Acadiana Advocate, Allison Dickerson, Lafayette Parish School System spokesperson, said the Lafayette Online Academy has received 4,500 applications as of Monday, July 20. Last year’s student enrollment was about 200 students in grades K-12, according to Jared Coutee, Lafayette Online Academy Principal.

The Lafayette Online Academy is a virtual learning option for those who don’t want their children at school in person due to the coronavirus pandemic. The district announced a reopening plan that will have students attend classes on a hybrid schedule, which means the children will alternate days in person and completing work virtually.

All students have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities offered at their home school. Lafayette Online Academy students can participate in athletics, attend prom, even graduate with their school’s class.

The school usually accepts students year-round, but due to the spike in applications, the district set a deadline for students to apply. That deadline is August 3.
