While putting togethe the countdown with the Hot Crew I was thinking to myself, "wow, this is THE sound that defined 2010". Whether you love it or hate it, it is called "pop" (popular) for a reason. Whether you are an avid radio listener, a digital music pod junkie or none of the above, it is hard to escape hearing the biggest songs of the year. I often find myself humming along to songs from the 80's & 90's and stopping to wonder "how and the hell do I know this song?" I didn't have the CD, I wasn't a fan of that particular style of music, and in some cases I don't even know the artist/track info. Pop music is "popular" because it finds it's way into our everyday life in many different ways, shapes and forms-more so now than ever with the "digital age" that has become a standard in the last decade. The way we are exposed to music, the way we consume music, the way that artists can now communicated directly via social media, the way that we can provide feedback, the way that a track can be distributed to MILLIONS by an artist just minutes after it is mixed down in the studio, be it home or professional, the way that through YouTube and reality shows, the average joe and his band can become stars overnight. "Music" as we know it is better than I can remember it ever being in recent memory. Boundaries continue to be crossed and artists and producers from different "genres" collaborating is more the norm than a novelty and the end result is fresh ideas and great new sounds. 2010 saw a fresh sound in music and a lot of great songwriting. I like to describe this putting together of songs as not just a "mix" .. but more of a medley. Below you can check out "The Sound of 2010" which originally aired on Hot 107.9 in our NYE mix during the final hour of 2010.  Hopefully I can make this an annual thing. Enjoy.
