27-year-old Ian Howard may face the death penalty if he is convicted of killing Lafayette Police Cpl. Mike Middlebrook.

According to our news partners at KATC, District Attorney Keith Stutes said during a hearing today that he plans to see the death penalty against Howard, who’s also charged with shooting two other people, leaving them with non-life threatening injuries.

Lafayette Police say Howard allegedly began shooting at Cpl. Middlebrook as the officer was responding to a shooting at a convenience store on Moss Street.

  • Howard currently sits in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on one count of 1st degree murder, 1 count of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer and 2 counts of Attempted Murder.
