86-year-old Edwin Edwards says he is not ready to make an official announcement, but that he's made up his mind on whether or not he would run for the 6th Congressional District.

In a phone interview with our news partners at Louisiana Radio Network, he told reporter Michelle Southern he realizes his age is something voters would consider. "But I hope that people would have the opportunity to view me as a man who is still able to move around fine, I don't have any disabilities and my mind is clear," said Edwards. "To me 80 is the new 60."

I don't have any disabilities and my mind is clear," said Edwards. "To me 80 is the new 60.

The 6th Congressional District became open when Congressman Bill Cassidy announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. Edwards says he is still working out the legalities after spending eight years in federal prison for corrupting the state's gaming license process.

"I feel that now is an appropriate time for someone who has some experience in legislative matters to try to help make things work up there (Washington, D.C.)," Edwards said. "One thing is certain, I can't make it any worse."
