10 Items You Cannot Throw Away in Regular Lafayette Parish Trash Pickup

Have you ever found yourself staring at a pile of stuff you no longer need or want, wondering: "Can I toss this out in the trash?" Well, if you're a Lafayette Parish resident, Debris Drop-Off Day is coming up soon (mark your calendars for March 9, 2024).

With the seasons changing, it's the perfect time to clear out clutter around your home. But before you get too toss happy, not everything can be thrown into those shiny new AWS trashcans. Those trashcans eventually end up getting dumped into the back of a trash truck in regular collection in Lafayette Parish. According to the Lafayette Consolidated Government's Public Works Department, here's an easy-to-follow list on what you can't send off with your weekly garbage service.

ITEMS THAT ARE NOT COLLECTED BY ACADIANA WASTE SERVICES:

No bagged items

AWS doesn't collect bagged trash left outside of the provided waste bins. Make sure it's in the can, and it's probably a good idea to make sure the lid closes to avoid trash potentially spilling out onto your property.

Construction debris

If you've got that DIY home remodel wrapped up, or had work done on your home. You can't leave the construction debris at the street for pickup.

Anything that's mostly metal

It's probably in your best interest to avoid tossing out anything that is mostly metal, although LCG says that large appliances may get a pass.

Barbeque pits

If you've got a rusted out barbeque pit or a grill that has seen better days, leaving at the street is not an option.

Bicycles

No bikes are allowed for pickup, but it may be a good idea to check with your local bike shop on options to dispose of it.

Ceiling fans

Broken ceiling fans or the casualty of your home upgrade cannot be left out in the driveway.

Toilets

Just, don't.

Hazardous waste

This one is obvious.

Fencing

Whether it's wooden, plastic, or metal, it's time to find another solution. (I've got one coming up in a bit).

Lawn mowers and swing sets

These two items and a no-go, especially when they are more metal than not.

By the way, if you've got metal items, you're in luck because they can be taken to a scrap metal dealer at absolutely no cost. Just Google "Scrap Metals" in Lafayette for where to go. For that bulky construction debris, you've got a few options: cram as much as you can into your 96-gallon cart each week (with the lid closed, of course), rent a dumpster, or haul it over to a "Construction & Demotion Landfill" (fees will apply, so call 291-8529 for the scoop on locations).

And don't forget about Debris Drop-Off Day on March 9. This is your chance to dispose of items like old wood, metal, furniture, appliances, and other bits and bobs that don't make the cut for curbside pickup. Just remember, no batteries, chemicals, or compressed gas cylinders – we don't want any surprises.
