Kevin Clash Resigns From ‘Sesame Street’ Amid New Allegations + The Story Thus Far
Kevin Clash isn’t having many sunny days, and has announced he's moved off of Sesame Street. (Apparently the Elmo puppeteer was bringing down the property values.)
In light of new underage sex allegations – that may or may not be true – Clash has resigned from the popular children's show. And he's facing a fresh new lawsuit.
In case you’re keeping score, here’s a quick breakdown of what’s been happening to the now former master of the world’s most annoying puppet.
Monday, Nov. 12: Unidentified young man accuses Clash of having a sexual relationship with him years ago when said accuser was only 16. Clash denies accusations in the lawsuit the man filed, saying the relationship was between consenting adults, but takes a leave of absence from Sesame Workshop to deal with charges.
Tuesday, Nov. 13: Unidentified young man recants his statements and says the relationship was an “adult consensual” one and he will say nothing further. All this after apparently reaching a cash settlement with Clash.
Wednesday, Nov. 14: The Smoking Gun discovers the identity – and police record – of the Elmo accuser and outs him as kind of a jerk.
Sunday, Nov. 18: The now-identified Sheldon Stephens claims he was forced into signing the settlement, which included the recant, and now he regrets it and insists he was telling the truth.
Tuesday, Nov. 20: A new accuser, who likely just smells money, comes forward with a $5 million lawsuit accusing Clash of having a pseudo-sexual relationship with him when he was only 15. (See, this is why opening your checkbook to make things go away is a bad idea.)
Slightly Later Tuesday, Nov. 20: Clash resigns from his job at Sesame Workshop. The makers of ‘Sesame Street’ release a statement saying in part:
“None of us, especially Kevin, want anything to divert our attention from our focus on serving as a leading educational organization. Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding Kevin’s personal life has become a distraction ... and he has concluded that he can no longer be effective in his job ... This is a sad day for ‘Sesame Street.’”
This whole thing is terribly tragic, but it's hard not to hear The Count in the background.
“One. ONE underage sex allegation. Ah ah ah ahhhh. Two. TWO underage sex allegations. Ah ah ah ahhhh.”
