LHSAA Football Championships May All Be Decided On Same Weekend

Currently, the LHSAA plays nine state title games over a two-week period.

As it stands now, champions in the four select brackets are crowned on a Friday, before five champions are decided the following weekend, including two on Friday, and then three more on Saturday.

That may very well change, with all nine championship football games in being played in a three-day timespan.

That’s the plan for next season, if the Louisiana High School Athletic Association executive committee finalizes the idea, which was presented at a meeting on Tuesday in Baton Rouge.

The plan, which came from the Louisiana High School Coaches Association, would have to be approved, before the Mercedes-Benz Superdome would officially host all nine state title games from December 7-9 of 2017, which would be a Thursday through a Saturday.

If the plan is approved, it eliminate the LHSAA having to rent the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on successive weekends, thereby saving money, eliminate the travel burden of staff, and give more fans to enjoy all nine championship games over the course of one weekend.

If the measure is approved, it would return the even to a similar format that it had in 2013, when Select teams played its games on the first Thursday.
