New Orleans Krewe To Honor Carrie Fisher With Second Line Parade
I would suppose death anywhere is a sad occurrence. However, in Louisiana death is often turned into a celebration of life. The Louisiana tradition of a second line parade to honor the dearly departed will take on a distinct Star Wars theme this Friday in New Orleans.
Ryan Ballard, leader of The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus Carnival marching group said that his group began preparations for a second line parade to celebrate the life of Princess Leia almost immediately after hearing the news of actress Carrie Fisher's passing.
The Leijorettes, a group of more than 100 marchers costumed as Princess Leia, are expected to lead the parade. This group according to a story on NOLA.com and in the Times-Picayune is made up mainly of roller derby athletes.
If you'd like to attend, the parade is planned to assemble in Markey Park in the Bywater at 3 p.m. and march at 4 p.m. Organizers say the approximate one hour parade will eventually make it's way to the Chewbacchus den located at 4321 St. Claude Ave. Following the parade, there will be a celebration of Fisher and her iconic character Princess Leia. The event is free and the public is welcome to attend. Donations to defray costs will be collected.
