Just try to imagine it: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performing at your wedding, alongside Mary Lambert and Madonna (!). Superstars like Beyonce and Paul McCartney crying tears of joy watching you get married. Celebs like Anna Kendrick snapping shots of you while you say your vows, repeating the words after officiant Queen Latifah.

Sounds like a dream, right? Well, it was a dream come true for 33 couples of all persuasions at Sunday’s (Jan. 26) Grammy Awards — and, yes, the marriages were legal!

Jesse Greika and his partner, Anthony Rollar, were among those wed at L.A.’s Staples Center during the historic performance of marriage-equality anthem ‘Same Love,’ mashed up with Madge’s ‘Open Your Heart.’ How did they get to be one of the lucky couples? (Editor’s Note: They are not the couple featured in the image above.)

Greika told Us Weekly the whole story, starting with the Facebook post by a casting company that started it all. The 38-year-old makeup artist and drag performer from San Diego was planning to marry 41-year-old leather craftsman Rollar in April, but they were struggling with the financial aspect of a wedding.

“[The casting company] wanted to know our stories,” Greika says. “I wrote a letter talking about how we’ve been together for 10 years, we’re very involved in our community and we would love to be part of a ceremony. We said we couldn’t afford a ceremony and that was the main reason I wrote the letter.”

When they found out it was a surprise set for the Grammy Awards, they jumped at the chance. “Then we saw this opportunity and we said if this was going to be on TV, it would be a way to share it with friends and family across the country,” Greika says.

And they clearly have no regrets, as the response from all — including the biggest stars in attendance — was positive and love-filled.

“It is a dream right now,” says Greika. “It wasn’t just meeting the celebrities that was great. It was all of their reactions. Everyone was so warm and telling us congratulations. There were people crying — Paul McCartney was crying, Beyonce had a a tear in her eye when we were walking by her and Jay Z. They shook our hands and said congratulations. So did Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. Backstage, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson came by and congratulated us. Julia Roberts, too. It was star after star, pretty incredible. A great experience. And the other couples were wonderful, too.”

The couples not only have an amazing wedding story to tell until the end of time, they can say they were a major part of the marriage-equality movement.

“I’m still pinching myself,” Greika said. “Madonna sang at my wedding! Who can say Queen Latifah married them, Madonna sang and Macklemore, Paul McCartney and Jay Z were there? Who would have ever thought? It was history in the making, and I’m so happy to be part of it. We’ve been fighting for equality for a long time and it was beautiful. It was definitely a step in the right direction.”
