There is a significant threat of severe storms and flash flooding across much of South Louisiana throughout the day today. A series of disturbances are moving out or the Rocky Mountains through Texas and into Louisiana. These disturbances will cause instability in the atmosphere. Combine that with an abundance of moisture being pushed into the area from the Gulf of Mexico on a strong southerly breeze and the ingredients are right for a bumpy day of weather.

Currently Southwest Louisiana is under a severe thunderstorm watch until at least 11 AM. The threat of strong storms with heavy rain, gusty wind, small hail, and even an isolated tornado could be extended even later in the day.

The Storm Prediction Center forecast places the entire state of Louisiana in the slight risk category. The current radar scan from the National Weather Service in Lake Charles certainly backs that suggestion up in real time.

There is also a good chance of flooding rains across the area. There is a flash flood watch posted for much Southwest Lousiana too. This will be in effect through at least Sunday morning. Some forecast models show rainfall potential as high as six inches across our area. Most of the forecast models are suggesting anywhere from two to five inches of rain will be common.

The forecast for Sunday does call for a significant threat of even more heavy rains. There will also be an extended threat of severe weather across the area as well.
