In a limited engagement in 3D, the 1994 Disney classic, ‘The Lion King,’ earned $29 million to take the top spot at the box office this weekend. ‘Contagion,’ last week’s most popular movie, moved to second place, while Ryan Gosling’s ‘Drive’ took third in its debut week. Former box office champ ‘The Help’ came in fourth, and ‘Straw Dogs’ rounded out the top five.

Could ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ be the surprise blockbuster of the summer? Critics certainly seem to think so. The James Franco vehicle, which serves as a reboot of the classic ‘Apes’ franchise, is receiving strong reviews thus far – or at least stronger than most had expected.

Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend. One is the fifth installment (yes, fifth) of the popular summer blockbuster series 'The Fast and the Furious', this time called 'Fast Five'. Most of the main players in the series are back for more high action, high energy scenes, with tons of car crashes.

It was another high-flying weekend at the box office for 'Rio.' The kids' animated movie, featuring the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, took the number one spot for the second weekend in a row, earning an impressive $28.6 million on over 3,800 screens. Since its release last weekend, the movie has grossed $81.3 million and counting.
