A recent analysis of Campus Safety and Security data published by the U.S. Department of Education has shed light on a concerning issue plaguing higher education institutions across the United States and here in Louisiana.

The study focused on violent crimes on campuses at public, private, and non-profit universities, emphasizing colleges with a minimum institution size of 500 students.

The findings of this comprehensive report have exposed the institutions with the highest numbers of violent crimes on campus between 2019 and 2021, spanning a three-year period.

In 2019 alone, a staggering total of 27,300 criminal incidents were reported to police and security agencies.

These incidents of violent crime were categorized into the following types:

  1. Rape: Defined as the penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus, with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.
  2. Murder/Non-negligent Manslaughter: The willful (non-negligent) killing of one human being by another.
  3. Negligent Manslaughter: The killing of another person through gross negligence.
  4. Robbery: Involves the taking or attempting to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force or threat of force or violence and/or by putting the victim in fear.
  5. Aggravated Assault: An unlawful attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury, often accompanied by the use of a weapon or means likely to produce death or great bodily harm.

It's important to note that this analysis exclusively focused on violent crimes and did not consider general criminal offenses, arrests, domestic violence, fondling, stalking, dating violence, hate crimes, or any other types of crimes categorized as VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) crimes by the U.S. Department of Education, apart from the aforementioned violent crimes.

One crucial aspect of the analysis was that it confined the scope to violent crimes committed on the campus premises itself. Campus Safety and Security defined "on-campus" as a reasonably contiguous geographic area comprising buildings or properties owned or controlled by an institution and used for educational purposes, including residence halls.
