CHARENTON, La. (KPEL) -- The man accused of shooting to death a Chitimacha police officer, killing another man, and placing two St. Mary Parish sheriff's deputies in critical condition has been charged by detectives.

Louisiana State Police Trooper Stephen Hammons says 48-year-old Wilbert Thibodeaux of  Charenton has been charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of attempted first degree murder, and one count of arson.

He is currently in the Iberia Parish Jail, Hammons says.

The two deputies who were originally admitted to hospitals in Lafayette and New Orleans in critical condition are now in stable condition, Hammons says.

Thibodeaux allegedly began shooting at responding officers after reports of a fire and that he was walking around with a shotgun.
