(KMDL-FM) It is the time of year when everyone is looking to do a little more outside. Okay, not during the heat of the day, but the early morning and late afternoon hours. Those are the most popular times for gardening enthusiasts in Louisiana and Texas to spend time tending their plants.

A lot of gardeners in Louisiana, as well as Texas, invest a lot of time and energy into their vegetables and flowers every year. And, if you've been to your local garden center, you know that the equipment you need to keep this wonderful hobby from becoming a backbreaking chore can be quite expensive.

That's why an offer of a "free" or discount on a "Gorilla Cart" from Tractor Supply has been getting so much attention online. It's the kind of deal that any gardener would love to share with fellow green thumb enthusiasts, especially when, if you meet certain requirements, you can get that wagon for as little as $10.

In case you're wondering, a Gorilla Cart from Tractor Supply could set you back well over $100, so the offer of the same equipment for $10 would be enticing. The offer also suggests that it's available as "a special service" for guests 55 and older.

Is the Offer of a Free or Discounted Garden Cart or Gorilla Cart Legitimate?

As you've probably figured out by now, the whole Gorilla Cart thing is a scam. The folks at Tractor Supply certainly want you to know that. They also want you to know they are not behind the scam even though their good name is being drug through the mud on social media sites.

Now, not all of the scam posts name Tractor Supply, but the idea of the scam is the same. They show a smiling gardener standing next to a pallet of carts. The text reads something along the lines of "Gorilla Cart Giveaway" or " $9.99 Gorilla Carts for 50+". If you open that link, don't follow any of the instructions on the page. If you do, then you do so at your own risk.

As is the case with most scams, in order to get your free or discounted cart, you're going to need to pay for shipping, and you can do that with your credit card. No, you don't do that with your credit card; that would be stupid. All the scammers need is your credit card information, and your bank accounts could be drained dry.

How Do You Know if Something Is a Scam or Not?

Just remember if it looks too good to be true and it's online, then grab your wallet, turn off the computer, and walk away...quickly. You'll be glad you did.
