State Farm Is Sending $136 Million Back to Louisiana Auto Insurance Customers — Here’s How to Get Yours
LOUISIANA - State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, which insures about 30% of Louisiana's private passenger auto market, will soon begin issuing $136 million in special dividends to qualifying policyholders in the state.
Who Qualifies for the State Farm Louisiana Dividend?
Policyholders who had a State Farm Mutual Private Passenger Auto Voluntary Preferred policy as of Dec. 31, 2025, will receive an average payment of $138 per vehicle. The payouts to Louisiana drivers are part of a $5 billion dividend State Farm is issuing to auto policyholders nationwide, which the company announced in February, citing its financial strength and stronger-than-expected underwriting performance.

How and When You Will Receive Your Payment
Eligible customers with an email address on file will receive an email between early August and early September 2026 asking them to select a payment method. Customers without an email on file will instead receive a check in the mail. Customers with more than one insured vehicle may receive multiple dividend payments, and State Farm says payments will go out in phases through the end of the year.
Why Louisiana Is Getting This Dividend — The Role of Legal Reforms
Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple said the dividend reflects how insurers' rates are tied to their projections. "Insurance companies base their rates on projections of how much they will collect in premiums and how much they will pay out in claims," Temple said. "When an insurance company takes in more money than anticipated and pays out less in claims, whether due to national trends, state-level reforms, or both, policyholders should benefit directly through lower premiums."

Temple pointed to broader trends in the state's auto insurance market: in 2025 and 2026 combined, private passenger auto insurers have filed more than 45 rate decreases, which are expected to save policyholders a combined $384 million on their next policy terms.
Temple credited a series of legal reforms passed over the last three legislative sessions, working with Gov. Jeff Landry and the Louisiana Legislature, for helping drive down cost pressures in the state's auto insurance market. Those changes include modifications to the state's comparative fault system, repeal of the direct action statute, new limits on third-party litigation financing in lawsuits, reversal of the Housley presumption, increased medical billing transparency in litigation, and stronger distracted driving laws.
