New Louisiana Laws August 1, 2024
Nearly 500 new laws have gone into effect today for Louisiana.
From panhandling, discussing sexuality and gender at school, lunch break laws for minors, taping student's mouths shut, and much more, there are a ton of new Louisiana laws you need to be aware of.

Louisiana Laws 8/1/24
Sex offenders could now be sentenced to surgical castration. The new law states the victim must be under the age of 13, and this does not apply to offenders under the age of 17.
Louisiana's fortified roof program has been extended and is now in effect as of 8/1/24.
In an effort to reduce insurance premiums, homeowners that carry Louisiana Citizens can now exclude tangible personal property and moveable property from their coverage.
The Louisiana requirement for lunch breaks for 16 and 17-year-old employees working 5 or more hours at a time was eliminated.
While panhandling is already illegal on Louisiana state highways, a new law now makes it illegal on public streets and some sidewalks.

"One law will ban transgender people from using school restrooms that align with their gender identity.
The law extends to prison and domestic violence shelter bathrooms and sleeping quarters. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are still allowed.
Discussing sexuality and gender at school is also banned.
Parents will now have to grant permission for students to change their names or pronouns at school. Plus, school employees cannot be punished for refusing to call a student or colleague by their preferred name."
It is now illegal for anyone to intentionally approach an officer engaged in their duties, after being ordered to "stop or retreat" Anyone in violation could face a $500 fine, 60 days in jail, or both.
HB46 VACCINES/VACCINATION: States that no one shall be required to receive a COVID-19 vaccine as a condition of enrollment or attendance at any public or nonpublic school.
If you're an LSU baseball fan, you'll be glad to know about HB432 MTR VEHICLE/LICENSE PLATES which allows for the creation of a new "LSU Baseball National Champions" specialty license plate.
Another new Sate law restricts the sale of THC products to stores that carry "hemp and medical marijuana", excluding gas stations.
A new law is now in effect concerning the description and punishment for home invasion.
The new home invasion law is stated as follows via legis.la.gov:
A. Home invasion is the unauthorized entering of any inhabited dwelling, or other structure belonging to another and used in whole or in part as a home or place of abode by a person, where a person is present, with the intent to use force or violence upon the person of another or to vandalize, deface, or damage the property of another.
B. Whoever commits the crime of home invasion shall be fined not more than five thousand dollars and shall be imprisoned at hard labor for not less than one year nor more than thirty years.
It is now prohibited to tape a student's mouth shut as a form of corporal punishment.
