Crash on Johnston Street in Lafayette Result of Attempted Maurice Traffic Stop That Led to High-Speed Chase
An attempted traffic stop in Maurice on Thursday (Mar. 16) resulted in a high-speed chase that ended in a multi-vehicle crash on Johnston Street in Lafayette.
Lafayette Police were called to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash in the 6600 block of Johnston Street. The accident snarled northbound traffic around lunchtime due to an overturned vehicle as authorities responded to the crash.
At least one person was transported to a hospital by medical personnel for non-life-threatening injuries as police continued to work the scene and re-route traffic.
Upon further investigation, it was realized that prior to the accident on Johnston street, Maurice Police made an attempt to conduct a traffic stop on one of the vehicles involved in the wreck. Police say the driver of that vehicle "refused to stop and a vehicle pursuit ensued."
The Maurice Police Department terminated their pursuit of the adult male who fled the attempted traffic stop "prior to entering the city of Lafayette." Although police stopped giving chase to the vehicle, the driver continued to travel at a high rate of speed which resulted in the Johnston Street crash around 10:42 a.m.
Lafayette Police arrested 32-year-old Vinnie Gary of Lafayette for Careless Operation of a Vehicle with Crash, Insurance Violation, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Possession of a Stolen Firearm.
All regular travel has resumed within the 6600 block of Johnston Street.
