Louisiana State Police announced they are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one dead at a Lafayette nightclub on Sunday (Apr. 9).

According to LSP, Lafayette Police made a request for state officials to investigate an officer-involved shooting incident at a Lafayette nightclub.

Around 10:45 p.m. on Sunday (Apr. 9), Lafayette police responded to reports of a shooting at La Bamba Lounge in the 4400 block of Johnston Street.

At approximately 10:45 p.m. on April 9, 2023, Lafayette Police responded to shots fired at a night club in the 4400 block of Johnston Street. A responding officer working a security detail at that night club discharged his weapon. One subject was shot by an officer and sustained a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The officer was not injured.

Based on preliminary reports, an officer working on security detail discharged his weapon after shots were fired at the nightclub.

While Louisiana State Police are investigating the officer-involved shooting, Lafayette Police are investigating the initial shooting incident that the security detail was responding to.

According to eyewitnesses in the immediate area, it was a chaotic scene as people were fleeing the nightclub in the wake of the incident. One person who was driving on Johnston Street tells me that she noticed people running into the roadway "acting crazy," as things were unfolding.

Police are still gathering details as the investigation remains in its preliminary stages and we plan on updating this story as more confirmed information is received.
