Authorities in Midland, Texas, say an active shooter incident that left one person dead and nine others injured has come to an end after the suspected gunman was confirmed deceased Friday afternoon.

The shooting sparked a massive law enforcement response across the city, with officers from multiple agencies converging on the area as residents and businesses were urged to shelter in place and avoid the scene.

City officials later announced that the active shooter situation had been resolved, though investigators remain on scene and several road closures are expected to stay in place while evidence is collected.

Shooting Spanned Multiple Locations

According to reports from Midland authorities and information shared by KATC, the violence began around 8 a.m. Friday and unfolded across multiple locations before ending near a veterinary hospital.

Midland Mayor Lori Blong confirmed that one person was killed and nine others were transported to area hospitals with injuries.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or provided details regarding the extent of their injuries.

Massive Police Response Included Armored Vehicles

As the situation developed, Midland Police officers responded to reports of gunfire and quickly worked to secure the area.

Police Chief Greg Snow said officers heard additional shots coming from a building during the response, prompting law enforcement to deploy armored vehicles and tactical resources.

Videos shared by witnesses and news outlets showed heavily armed officers arriving in armored vehicles while robots were sent into the area to assist with the operation.

Witness Andrea Mendias, who works near the veterinary hospital where part of the incident unfolded, told reporters it sounded as though at least 40 shots had been fired.

Suspect Confirmed Dead

After a lengthy standoff that lasted several hours, the City of Midland announced that the suspected shooter had died.

"The active shooter incident has been resolved, and the suspect is confirmed deceased," city officials said in a public update.

Officials did not immediately release information about how the suspect died or whether the death occurred during an exchange with law enforcement.
