Louisiana is knee-deep in the middle of a very volatile spring weather pattern. That pattern has shown an almost regular parade of storm systems moving across the area about every three or four days. Each time a storm system passes at least part of the state gets hit with at least the threat of severe storms. The forecast for late tonight and especially during the day Wednesday reflects the latest threat the state's residents will likely be dealing with.

For today, the Storm Prediction Center has just a small portion of the northwestern corner of the state on notice for big storms and possible tornadoes. The most likely scenario suggests the Shreveport/Bossier City area will be affected by storms late this afternoon and especially this evening.

By Wednesday the northern half of the state will be under the gun for severe storms. The SPC has placed that part of the state at a slight risk for severe storms. However, to the south along the I-10 corridor, we can't rule out some heavy weather either. While the threat and number of severe storms are forecast to be significantly less along I-10 versus I-20 there is still a pretty good threat of heavy downpours, gusty winds, and frequent lightning in storms as they move through the area.

The storm system that will be the catalyst for these storms is expected to move into South Louisiana during the day on Wednesday and then stall. While the system remains stationary over the state a series of disturbances are expected to track along the frontal boundary and this will ramp up rain chances all the way through Saturday.

As you can see in the graphic above from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Lake Charles most of South Louisiana will receive at least a couple of inches of rainfall between Wednesday and Easter Sunday. While we don't anticipate a major flooding event from this storm system, there could be storms that drop locally heavy amounts of rain over a short period of time.

For that reason, the Weather Prediction Center has a portion of Louisiana included in the slight risk zone for excessive rainfall on Thursday. That excessive rainfall guidance will likely be adjusted as the forecast for later in the week is fine-tuned for potential rainfall and localized flooding issues.

By the way, the outlook for Good Friday family gatherings suggests you boil the crawfish under a covered patio as rain chances will be rather high during the day. The forecast for Easter Sunday also includes a chance of rain but rain chances on Sunday will be about half of what they are forecast to be on Friday.
