A St. Landry Parish sheriff's deputy is on administrative leave and facing charges after he allegedly caused a scene at the Opelousas DMV after an employee told him to wear a mask.

According to Opelousas police, Ryan Fenton went to the DMV office on Creswell Lane on official business. When he arrived, an employee told him to put on a mask before entering. Investigators say that's when Fenton pulled his gun and used it to bang on the door, demanding to be let inside.

Chief Martin McLendon of the Opelousas Police Department says customers in the DMV's waiting room feared for their safety while Fenton used his gun to bang on the door.

Officers took Fenton into custody and called the sheriff's office to report the incident. Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says he sent his patrol supervisor to the scene to find out what happened.

Guidroz says he put Fenton on leave and opened an investigation after his arrest.

"Deputy Fenton was immediately placed on administrative leave removing his badge, deputy commission,  police unit, and department weapons until the administrative investigation is over," Guidroz said.
