While Cormouche was an 'innocent bystander' and had no prior relation to the other victim, this tragedy has brought both families together to fight for change.
Friends and family gathered Wednesday evening to honor Carmouche’s memory with a balloon release, using the moment to speak out about the devastating impact of gun violence in their community.
This tragedy has left families searching for answers and justice. Renee Helaire, Carmouche's second cousin, shared with KLFY that “It affected Lafayette as a whole. Lafayette is a good community, a good place to come and have fun. Let’s continue that. Put the guns down, please."
Carmouche’s family members are hoping to spark meaningful change. “Put the guns down and pray,” said his first cousin, Kevin Carmouche. “God wouldn’t want us fighting like this all day, every day.”
Jaedyn Nelson, a 14-year-old family member, echoed the need for change, noting that gun violence is affecting younger generations as well. “At my old school, I knew a lot of people who toted guns, which is stupid. You’re not even old enough to be able to own a gun,” Nelson told KLFY.
