Trailer Park Residents Concerned After Landlord Says Rent Will Go Up If Biden Wins Election
The landlord of a Fort Morgan, CO trailer park is letting tenants know that their vote at the polls will determine their future rent payments.
According to KUSA-TV, residents were taken aback when they got a notice saying their rent would not be raised "for at least two years" if President Donald Trump was re-elected.
TO ALL TENANTS: Please understand IF Joe Biden is elected as our next President, everything you do and have to pay for will change completely. Everything will be increased. Like paying ALOT (sic) more in taxes, utilities, gasoline, groceries, new permits, fees and regulations...everything! This also means YOUR RENT will be increased to cover these expenses. Most likely, rent would DOUBLE in price! IF the current President is re-elected, WE WILL NOT RAISE THE RENT FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS!
The letter added that the landlords weren't trying to sway anyone's vote, but simply informing residents what their reaction would be based on the election results.
Voting is your choice and we are not telling you how to vote. We are just informing our tenants what WE will do according to the election results. If Trump wins, we all win. If Biden wins, we all lose. VOTE on November 3, 2020.
One of the residents says she and her family have lived in that trailer park for 20 years and were shocked to see the letter—especially since they live "paycheck to paycheck" and are "barely making ends meet."
I mean, we can't control how this whole election goes. It was mainly hurtful, you know? How could someone say something like that or basically threaten us according to something that we can't control?
Others on social media called out the landlords saying their letter is an example of voter intimidation. The letter has also gotten the attention of the Colorado Secretary of State who has passed it on to the Attorney General.
Regardless of where you stand politically (especially if don't you "stand" politically at all), I couldn't imagine getting a letter like this from my landlord—especially after the type of 2020 that so many of us have had to endure.
