ESPN Apologizes For Report On Michael Sam’s Showering Habits
ESPN has apologized for a report they ran on Michael Sam's showering habits during a piece centered around his chances on making the St. Louis Ram's roster.
Ever since they hosted his exclusive "coming out" interview, ESPN has pretty much followed every intimate detail of Sam's journey as the first openly gay NFL player in history—but yesterday's report on his showering habits couldn't be described as anything less than ridiculous.
Today, the Worldwide Leader in Sports released a statement apologizing for the blunder and promised to never run anything like it again.
ESPN regrets the manner in which we presented our report. Clearly on Tuesday we collectively failed to meet the standards we have set in reporting on LGBT-related topics in sports.
My question here is who thought this was a good idea in the first place? Why would ESPN think that anyone cares who Michael Sam was showering with—let alone ANY player on the Ram's roster, the NFL—or professional sports in general?
I think the response from Sam's fellow Rams defensive end Chris Long hit the nail on the head.
Now, if we could only get them to chill on the wall to wall Manziel coverage.
