Authorities with the Louisiana State Police and a bomb squad from Fort Polk detonated an explosive device they found in a Lafayette apartment.

The hand grenades were found in an apartment, in the Bell Downs apartment complex off of West Congress St. in Lafayette, after the tenant of the apartment was taken into custody.

Police did not know if the device was active, thus they blew it up overnight as a precautionary measure. If you were in the Judice area early Tuesday morning and you heard a loud bang---that was the explosion.

According to a spokesperson with the Lafayette Fire Department, the grenade was transported to a remote location in a dump truck, which was filled with sand and they attached an explosive device to the hand grenade, then detonated it.

Luckily, nobody was injured in this process. The tenant of the apartment was arrested by police after he allegedly shot several rounds into the ground late Monday night. He was taken to an area hospital for evaluation, but has not yet been booked into jail.
