Deadly Crash Caught On Cam

We hear how deadly it is time and time again, but texting while driving is a huge problem that continues to lead to a ton of unnecessary accidents. Recently, I blogged about bad driving habits in Lafayette, and distracted driving made the list. Every day I see people buried in their phones, putting on make up or digging around in their backseats while driving and it scares me to think that not only are they putting their own lives at risk, but they are putting lives of others on the road at risk as well.

Now this particular video has been circulating around the web, and the description says that it was captured from the dash cam of a State Trooper. It also warns of the dangers that come as a result of distracted driving. After doing a little digging, I found a story on Hoax Slayer that shed a little more light on the videos true orgin.

According to the site, the accident occured on February 24, 2012 in Russia. A Russian news article about the accident claims that the driver of the Nissan SUV lost control of his vehicle, crossed over to the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming 18-wheeler. The driver, a resident of Moscow identified as Alexander, died at the scene.

No one will know for sure what caused the accident, or what Alexander was doing when he lost control of his vehicle, but the message here is still very clear. Deadly accidents can happen in a split second, so texting, reading, or anything that would take our attention off of the road for even the smallest fraction of time is extremely dangerous.

It only took a few times of me texting while driving, then looking up at the rear end of a stopped car to make me realize that whatever I was texting could wait. Sadly, it takes us seeing extremely graphic results of distracted driving to really make things hit home, and right now this video in particular has a LOT of people second guessing their choice to drive while distracted.
