Don’t Let the Freeze Get You: Winterize Your RVs and Campers Now, Louisiana and Texas!
As winter's chill sets in across the Gulf Coast, Louisiana, the sportsman's paradise, and neighboring Texas, a state teeming with outdoor enthusiasts, are reminded of an important seasonal task: winterizing campers and RVs. Dylan Thibodeaux from Tech RV Service Center in Maurice, Louisiana, raises the alarm that too many residents neglect this crucial step during freezing temperatures or extreme winter conditions.
"While you're busy protecting your pipes, pets, and plants, don't forget to give your RV or camper the attention it needs before the frost hits," Dylan advises. As a seasoned expert in RV maintenance, he has witnessed the costly consequences of inadequate winter preparation.
For those ready to take action, Dylan offers these essential tips:
- Drain the Water System: Ensure that all fresh water tanks and both hot and cold low point drains are completely emptied to prevent any freezing and subsequent damage.
- Water Heater Maintenance: Remove the plug from the front water heater for full drainage. Alternatively, you can choose to leave it as is.
- Shut Off Low Points: Ensure these are securely closed to avoid any leaks.
- Activate Water Heater Bypass: Turn this on and set the water pump valve to winterize, ready for the next step.
- Winterize Fluid Application: Dylan recommends using Winterizing Fluid, available at Tech RV. A typical camper requires about two gallons. Place a hose in the fluid, then open faucets until the pink fluid runs through, indicating full circulation.
For owners of high-end buses, don’t forget to turn on the hydraulic heater.
If you opt not to use Winterizing Fluid, Dylan suggests another approach: "Open up cabinets and turn the furnace to as low as it can go. Ensure your propane tanks are full. But remember, never leave a floor heater in the camper unattended."
In case of any doubts or difficulties, Dylan is ready to assist. He can be reached at Tech RV Service Center, located in Maurice, LA, at 337-288-4501.
Remember, a little effort now can prevent a world of trouble later. As winter sets in, make sure your home-away-from-home is as protected and prepared as the rest of your household.
