Authorities have confirmed that the man at the center of a widely shared Opelousas escape is now dead following a multi agency police involved shooting in Lafayette Parish.

According to Louisiana State Police, 34 year old Michael Vavasseur of Duson was the asuspect killed during the incident on April 18, 2026.

This confirmation connects two major stories that unfolded across Acadiana over the past several days.

From Viral Escape To Multi Parish Pursuit

Earlier this week, Vavasseur made headlines after escaping from a transport vehicle in Opelousas. A viral video appeared to show a man matching his description running through traffic while still in shackles.

That situation escalated days later when Scott Police attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a 2014 Nissan Altima believed to be driven by Vavasseur.

Authorities say he refused to stop, triggering a pursuit that moved through Lafayette Parish and into Carencro, with multiple agencies assisting.

Chaotic Pursuit Ends In Gunfire

During the chase, Vavasseur stopped at a residence on Tee Ma Road where a passenger exited the vehicle and was taken into custody. He then fled again, nearly striking a Carencro police officer.

An officer fired at the vehicle, but Vavasseur continued to flee until crashing into a law enforcement unit on North Wilderness Trail.

After the crash, investigators say Vavasseur exited the vehicle armed with a firearm and ran. While fleeing, he reportedly turned and fired at officers.

Law enforcement returned fire, striking Vavasseur, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

K-9 Shot, Officer Injuries Avoided

During the exchange, a Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office K 9 was shot. The dog was treated by a veterinarian and is currently in stable condition.

No other law enforcement officers were reported injured during the incident.
