In an effort to strengthen ties between the community and law enforcement, Lafayette, Louisiana, is joining over 16,700 communities across the United States for the 40th Annual National Night Out on Tuesday, October 3rd. The event, which is a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting crime and drug prevention awareness, is a significant opportunity for Lafayette residents to engage with local police officers and community organizations.

The Lafayette Police Department (LPD) is encouraging residents to participate by locking their doors and turning on porch lights in a symbolic gesture of support. However, the main event takes place at Girard Park from 5:30-7:00 p.m., where LPD officers will interact with the community in a relaxed, festive setting.

But it's not just about serious talk on crime prevention; the event promises fun activities designed for the whole family. Children can enjoy a range of activities from jumping in bouncy castles to face painting. They can even meet local celebrity, McGruff the Crime Dog, and pet the horses of LPD's Mounted Patrol. Additionally, the Lafayette Fire Department will feature a Smoke House—a special exhibit where fog simulates smoke, teaching kids about the importance of smoke detectors and how to escape a fire safely.

For high schoolers pondering a career in law enforcement, the event offers an invaluable learning opportunity. They can find out more about the LPD Explorer Program, which gives young adults a closer look into what a career in policing entails.

Furthermore, nearly a dozen community organizations will be on site, providing essential information to attendees. The evening aims not just to build stronger relationships between citizens and the police but also to create a more tightly-knit community overall.

National Night Out is a collaboration between the National Association of Town Watch and local police departments, including Lafayette's own LPD. The event has far-reaching impact, with participation from communities in all 50 U.S. states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and even military bases worldwide.
