A tragic shooting at the Mall of Louisiana has left one teenager dead and five others injured, sending shockwaves through Baton Rouge and beyond. The incident happened Thursday afternoon in the busy food court area along Bluebonnet Boulevard, a place typically filled with families and shoppers.

Authorities confirmed that 17-year-old Martha Odom, a senior at Ascension Episcopal School, later died from her injuries. The school described her as a bright and joyful presence whose kindness impacted everyone around her.

Teen Suspect Turns Himself In

Baton Rouge Police say 17-year-old Markell Lee has turned himself in and is now facing serious charges, including first-degree murder, five counts of attempted murder, and illegal use of a weapon. He is currently being held at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Police have also identified a second suspect who remains at large. Investigators say additional persons of interest have been identified, and more arrests are possible as the case develops.

Four individuals who were initially detained following the shooting have since been released pending further investigation.

Victims Still Recovering

In addition to Odom’s death, several others were injured during the shooting. One victim, identified as 43-year-old Donnie Guillory, remains in critical condition and is undergoing surgery.

Authorities have not yet released details about the conditions of the other victims but say the investigation remains active.

Officials Respond To Violence

Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse and Mayor-President Sid Edwards both addressed the community following the incident, calling it a moment that showed both tragedy and heroism.

Edwards praised first responders who rushed toward danger, while also issuing a warning to those involved in violent activity that law enforcement will act swiftly.

He also urged the public not to generalize or stereotype young people in the wake of the shooting, emphasizing that most are working toward a better future.

Ongoing Investigation And Call For Information

Police are asking anyone who may have information, especially cellphone video from inside or around the mall, to come forward. Tips can be submitted directly to investigators or through Crime Stoppers.
