A Missouri woman is facing assault charges in a case where she allegedly struck a man she says was supplying her son with heroin. Sherrie Gavan says that her son has been hooked on the drug since his high school days, but when one man approached her son to sell him the drug, she allegedly snapped. Her son, Clayton, who is now clean has been approached several times by the dealer and his mother has had enough of the drug dealer trying to bring her son back down.

Sherrie Gavan claims the man aided Clayton in relapsing several times. She finally says she had enough in December and went to try and talk to him. “I just wanted him to leave my son alone, and stay away from where I work and stay away from where we live,” she said.

In the police report, Gavan said that while she was talking to the man attempting to supply her son, the man reached for something in his car and that is when she "felt threatened." In the statement she says she hit the man with a baseball bat, telling him to get away.  When he approached her again, she says she hit him a second time. After that she left, and nine hours later, she says sheriff’s deputies arrived to question her.  Deputies confirm they filed a report, but no arrest was made.

The question I keep asking myself is, do I blame the mother and would I have done the same? One, I DO NOT blame this mother at all. Knowing that her child is battling the demons in his life, she is doing what she thinks is right for her son and for her family. All that this woman was doing here was attempting to protect her own child, and assist him in his recovery. Secondly, had I been in this woman's situation I too would have probably pulled out a bat. No person should ever submit to someone trying to bring down their own child. In this case, I actually applaud this woman's effort. Good for her, and shame on the individual trying to bring down a kid in recovery.
