Slam Dunk

When most people think of NBA All-Star Weekend, the first event that comes to mind is the slam dunk contest.

Victor Dukes, a forward, from Nettleton High School in Arkansas gets my vote for "Dunk Of The Year." Watch this amazing form of athleticism from a kid that is only a SOPHOMORE in high school.

When the Harlem Globetrotter's recently visited the Lafayette Cajun Dome, I was hoping to see this guy in action. Unfortunately, the world's tallest basketball player Paul Sturgess, "Tiny" is his nickname, was not present that night. Make room for Baylor's 6-foot-8 star Brittney Griner in the NCAA Women's Basketball history book. Griner just became the second woman ever to dunk the basketball in an NCAA tournament. The top-seeded Baylor team rolled to a 76-57 win over ninth-seeded Florida.

One of favorite halftime attractions at professional basketball games is when amateurs take to the court and attempt to pull-off the slam dunk. Of course, with the help of a trampoline or two that's when the entertainment takes new heights. Watch what happened at a recent Phoenix Suns game and see the end result of what happens when one simply jumps TOO HIGH for a slam dunk.

Other than Super Bowl Weekend, the NBA All-Star Weekend is my second favorite weekend in all of sports. The various competitions caught my attention at a young age and since then I have always anxiously awaited the NBA All-Star Weekend.

When you're Blake Griffin, your regular dunks look like other people's highlights, so it's extra hard to get that "ohhhhhhhhhhh" reaction. When people see Los Angeles Clippers recaps on Sportscenter, it's almost a guarantee that you will see Blake Griffin posterizing some poor opponent with his above the rim antics.

Most would agree that Miami Heat's Superstar Lebron James is the best overall athlete in the world. Well if any of you doubt that, see what he did to an opposing player in a recent NBA game while going to the rim. James reminded a lot of his critics that he still has "game" and that he is indeed one of the best athletes in the world.

We have seen it many times during the halftime festivities or during timeouts at basketball games, the team's mascot takes the court and displays it's leaping abilities, with the assistance of a trampoline, and slam dunks the ball.
